2026 varmint shots.

Cheap Winchester XPert 17WSM suppressed sent this pigeon to bird dropping heaven at about 50 yds. That little cartridge never ceases to amaze me. Please Tikka or CZ…build us a rifle.
Ruger makes one and it's a tack driver for a rimfire. Great trigger and love the bolt way better than the Savage B-mag bolt.

Thinking the 5mm Remington mag was ahead of its time. Perhaps Winchester could load some 24 grain 20 caliber bullets in the WSM case and keep the speed up to eclipse what Remington started so many years ago. Now thinking of a Molly Hatchet song, something about Dreams I'll never see... 😉

Wondering if you have ever tried 25 grain bullets suppressed and if they are noticeable quieter than the 20 grain offerings.

My thoughts mirror yours, Matt. The 24 grain would be amazing in that case.

I have not tried the 25 grain offering and, frankly, gave no thought to potentially being quieter. I got tunnel vision on the speed of the 20 grainer and its accuracy is quite satisfactory for a sub $400 rifle. But you’ve given me something to look at. I’ll buy a box and report my findings. I’m using the Silencer Co Sparrow model suppressor. Not as quiet as I’d hoped for, but still effective.

So far I've shot my YHM Stinger with 22lr subs and 30 grain bullets from a 17Hornet that run 2550. Kinda like a 17hmr but with a heavier payload.
It seems to me as you go down in bullet diameter the report is quieter but still a crack if supersonic. Maybe it's time to think about a threaded Contender barrel in Squirrel or Mink....

Tell more, that sounds interesting.

My goal is simply just an accurate/ guiet round that will precisely put a bullet into a crows vitals at 100 yards or a bit less. Honestly a suppressed 22lr is close to what I want, but I feel that better accuracy can be obtained with a reloadable round. It all really started when I saw how well the Ruger 17 Hornet shot with off the shelf factory stuff, kinda surprised me and got the wheels turning. Since it was already a 9 twist I thought a 30 grain bullet would still stabilize and be slower so a bit quieter too. I guess what I'm wanting is a 17 Blackout of sorts. Perhaps I should neck down the 5mm Craig case and break out the stash of 37s. Been thinking about the sub 17s but trying to avoid going down that rabbit hole.
