Savage Axis action???

is there anything inherently wrong or broken with the axis action? Besides it feels sloppy, loose tolerances, not buttery smooth? All long actions? Not a ton of aftermarket support.

I’ve only built one “custom” bolt gun but it started with a 700 action that fell in my lap. Got an axis 223 that could fall in my lap now and curious if any of you guys have run one?

I’ve got a Ruger American that shoots surprisingly well for as rough and sloppy it feels. Making me think the axis might have a chance???

I haven't played around with one yet.
Been wanting one to see what they are like. Good/bad? Think I'd like a used one to play with.
I'm sure someone here has or had one.

@Billinthedesert I feel you with the stock. I’m thinking that if I give this a go, the stock would be the first thing to go and pick up a Boyd’s or field stock just to get something more functional. I’d be on a budget so not super worried that there isn’t a ton of high end stocks/chassis out there.

I'll start by saying I love my Savages. I have 5 right now but have had dozens over the decades. Never been impressed with the Axis. I do not own one but have helped several friends with theirs. My opinion is for very little more money you can start out with a 110 series action. You will have better choices for available stocks and triggers, the small shank barrels are interchangeable.
In the end it will produce better results and should serve you very well.

The Axis actions are great. They are easy to true up, and bolt faces, accutriggers, etc swap over easily. The bolt lift is a little stiffer than a Model 10/110, but can easily be resolved with a bolt lift kit. Stock options are slightly less than a model 10/110 but only by a small percentage. Most folks who shy away from them have never actually used one.

I have a friend who recently got a Savage Axis Pro 2 in 270, and the new stocks look and feel really nice! His has a threaded muzzle, pic rail on top, Cerakoted action and barrel, and the stock color is nice too. I helped him develop a load for it, with Berger 130 bullets and it shoots 1/2" groups with our load. He got it at a clearance price from Brownells for $355, so no complaints on that front either. He's not planning on changing out the stock, so he was a happy camper.

Savage has completely replaced their 110 line. Makes me wonder what will happen to the axis line.
