Favorite 17

which of your children do you love most? one shouldn't have to make such a choice. furbearer season opens tomorrow and i have to decide what to defend myself with. the one i shoot most is a cartridge that is now 25 years old, 17/4.5x30 aka 17 velociraptor. it burns 11-12 grains of powder and spits 17 gr vmaxs out at 4100 fps. i guess it would be my favorite for foxes, even though i have killed coyote with it. if i am going after coyote and not fox i step up to my 17 mach Iv or 17 remington.
once upon a time i hunted fox with a 20 tac but gave up when i could hold them up and read a newspaper thru the hole in them.

As mentioned earlier I'm using the .17 Remington, but when I am targeting foxes I put a reduced load of 4198 and a 20 gr. Vmax going out at around 3600 fps.I've only had one exit out of scores of foxes, and that one was, for lack of a better term, spectacular. The results were virtually unrecognizable as a fox. For bobcat and coyote I use a bit hotter load with a 25 gr Berger or 25 Gr Vmax. Great on cats, but frankly I like a bit more horsepower on coyotes, though it has taken a couple of my biggest coyotes. For hogs I like the 30 gr Berger ( discontinued) but have killed them fine with 25 gr Bergers and 25 Gr Vmax.

First post.......

Although through the years I've used many of the .17's.......the one I'm closely tied to is the 17 Javelina.
Here's one......

opening day of furbearer today, shot this guy on the club rifle range. called him up and smacked him with a 17 mach IV 20 gr vmax

i have a stash of 30 gr Berger's i guard like gold. i think black hole bullets makes a 30, read it somewhere.

one never knows what a 17 bullet is going to do. shot a wounded antelope with a 25 gr Hornady hp at about 50 yards with my 17/223. it took a few steps, wabbled and fell over dead. went back next morning and all that was left was hair. coyotes had devoured or carried off everything else.

While hunting squirrels in Missouri I shot a squirrel with my 17 Mach 2. he was hanging by one paw and screaming his head off. 30 seconds a long-legged Missouri coyote jumped the fence and stopped right under him. he looked up and i put a Mach 2 bullet in the soft spot at the base of the throat. he stood on his hind legs and pawed at thin air as he fell over backward, kicked twice and died.

My first 17 was a 17hmr, not a wildcat (now) but the most common .17 that's available.
I watched for years looking for a l/h Cooper in 17 Ackley Hornet, I never found one but still want a .17AH, it's on my bucket list
The first l/h Cooper model 38 I found was in .17 HeBee, I still have it and do enjoy the HeBee
Since the HeBee came my way I also added a T/C Contender in 17 Ackley Bee, but that 17AH still eludes me

BTW I'm always on the lookout for 218 Bee cases, so if anyone has some for sale please msg me.

i have had half a dozen 17 ah's one 17 k hornet and 3 17 hornady hornets, couldn't find a dimes worth of difference between them. the 17 k hornet was a kimber of oregon, the 17 hornady were cz's and the rest were custom rugger 77 hornets custom barreled. the kimber was the worst shooter followed by the cz's. the best shooters were the rugers with custom barrels and a sub sami chamber.

I only have three .17s.
The Cooper VR I got from you, now Rider has it on loan.
The NEF HMR I rechambered to the VR, and a factory NEF .17M2.
I have only loaded 20gr v'max in it. After blowing the NEF up with 10.0gr
I cut back to 9.5gr AA1680. Still get 3460fps.
Seeing the .17M2 was trying to dry up I bought 1600 rounds for it.

"Im tempted to build one. I have a barrel blank and dies. Buddy gave me a mini mauser that I could use. I've also thought about doing an ar15. Need to find a reamer eventually"

17-556 kak ar barrel are available for 200.00 for the ar. one of the things i miss about saubier was the classifieds. got a lot of my accessories from there. why no classifieds here?

Classifies will be coming in the future, Eric is working diligently to make that happen.

My first 17 was a 17Mach1v so if I have to pick one, since we go way back and have shared many great hunts I'd have to pick that one. But I really have a difficult time with this question my 17AH, 17AB,17HeBee,17 Javelina,17-222,17Bobcat,17 Remington, 17PPC are all near and dear to me.

My favorites are my Savage .17HMR and my two Savage .17 WSM rifles. My HMR is retired. My WSM rifles work much better towards large varmints I encounter while small game hunting. My wife passed away here at home after surgery last month and our youngest son living with us passed away of a sudden heart attack here at home last May so it's just the dogs and me at home. I am just now thinking of hunting again.
My thoughts are with you, Buddy.
Ken.

I have been shooting the 17 AH for 20 years. I started with a Cooper 38 Classic. I have no idea how many thousand rounds I have fired through it.
It does not shoot as good on paper now but it seems to be laser guided on prairie dogs. Also have a T/C contender with a bullberry barrel and a Ruger 77 custom by Wessinger Custom. I had a 17 fireball in a Remington model 7 CDL for a while. I could never get the accuracy out of it that I expected.
In the 17 HMR I shoot the CZ 457 and a Weatherby MK XXII.
Also I have been forming cases and shooting Georges' 17 VR. It is a tack driver!
