Anyone else into it getting into long range varmint/predator hunting? This past fall I built a 6mm284 in collaboration with Varminter magazine. We went with a 26” 8 twist heavy profile Criterion barrel, Warwick Tactical 715 short action, Grayboe Core stock, Triggertech diamond 700 trigger and topped it with a Arken EP5 7-35x56. I’ve been focusing on 105 Berger VLD Hunters at 3325fps at the muzzle. So far my longest shot is 772 yards on a badger, my son, 13yo, had his longest shot at 533 yards also on a badger. As of right now, I only have 80 rounds through it and am starting load development with 80gr NBT’s.

My old hunting partner built a 40XBR 6-284 for pd shooting. His best shot was at about 1/2 mile.
Here's a pic of my Searcy 20BR, with Leupold 8.5-25AOSF. It shoots the Berger 50LTB at 3950fps.....and a 40VMax at 4150fps.
My best shot was a pd at 792 yards.

Then there's my 40XBR 22-250AI, with Leupold 24XAO Target.

Good old times......on the Texas High Plains.

The first I remember reading about long range varmint shooting was written by Boyd Mace and his search for Rock chucks, I remember reading about his 257 Banshee.
The stories were in Precision Shooting, good reading, only problem is we don't have Rock chucks here in New Zealand, we do have rabbits, hares, goats, a few weasels, stoats, ferrets, plus feral cats, Rabbits and goats are the most plentiful.
For tree hunting we have possums, a bit bagger and harder to kill than your squirrels

In 2000 in Montana, I made my longest shot on a pd at a lasered 841 yards with my Holland-built 243 Ackley shooting 70gr NBT's.

Built on a M700 action, blueprinted, Holland V-Block design, Jewel trigger, Holland QD brake, Holland lug, 24" Pac-Nor Super Match SS barrel in a McMillian Marksman stock, skim bedded. Leupold VX3 6.5-20X.

Smith 4" M617 22LR on board for those pesky ones that pop up 25 yards from the bench, "daring you". ;)
