What’s old is new again

I usually like to listen to podcasts when I am reloading. Takes away some of the boredom. I listened to this one today from Hornady regarding the 17 Hornet. I always have to laugh at the new generation of shooters shooting the new hot cartridges. Most of those are based on old cartridges and sometimes perform the same. We do have some new technology that I am grateful for though. Enjoy if your into listening to this type of stuff.

Great podcast, was hoping to hear some mention of Doug Derner and his contribution to the birth of the 17 Hornet. I know he saw my friend Dan C shoot a pd at 503 yards with a Cooper 17 Ackley Hornet at one of the Saubier shoots in Nebraska before the 17 HH was a thing. It definitely is interesting to see how they put their spin on an old classic and often make it a bit better. I am definitely going to search episode 81 and learn more about the 17 HMR,thanks for sharing this one.

Matt you're right, Doug should have had a LOT of credit since it was his baby. Your boss gets the credit though. Doug built the first rifle on the Ruger 77/Hornet. I thought maybe you had shot it. He was passing it around on one of our PD shoots to get opinions. I still have a big hand full of the first run brass he gave me. It's still in the straight walled form. He formed the first cases by hand. I will say Hornady, I think, took good care of Doug after his stroke. Put him in a position he could handle without tension. He left on his terms in the end. He was a good guy.

Thank you for filling in the gaps Ray. I was at the first two Saubier shoots and missed the subsequent ones when Doug must of had his Ruger. Would have loved to have made it. Was definitely a great time and a great group of people. I did watch the #81 podcast on the 17HMR and was happy to hear them mention Small Caliber News, albeit "some guy from Ohio" sure is funny what gets mentioned or remembered...

I listened and commented on their page. They absolutely love the 20gr. so much that they discontinued the 25gr. Which was only a few hundred feet per second slower, and the the BC is massive.

You are right that 25 Vmax is a game changer, very happy my new 17H is a 9 twist so I can shoot them in it. Something about those 20s though, they just flat out shoot well in all my smaller 17s either 10s or 9 twists. When I first shot the factory loaded 20s from Hornady I was pleased with the accuracy but the velocity was a bit slower than their claimed velocity which I thought may have been due to the Rugers 18.5" choice of barrel length. I am happy to report that a fairly mild load of AA1680 in my handloads has achieved the factory spec of 3650fps with the 20 grain Vmax.

Thinking outside the box a little here I have always thought a 30 vmax for the larger 17s would be incredible, can you imagine the b.c. it would have and how well it would kill distant 'chucks or coyotes? I loved Todd's 30 Gold because it did exactly that, now that they are so scarce I feel Hornady could really do well with a new 30 grain bullet. The 25 Vmax is definitely a great bullet and fast in the bigger 17s but a new 30 could really be something special. Of course the bean counters would probably say just shoot a .204Ruger....

It would be nice if someone picked up the 30 gr pill again and started manufacturing it. I use it in the 17 Rem. Not sure how it would do in the hornet. I do like the 25s in the hornet.

My thoughts exactly, I do have some bigger 17s that could use a 30 vmax. I tried a few 30s in the Hornet just to check stability and velocity and to see how quiet they sounded through the suppressor.
