Favorite 17

Is that a Winslow rifle? I had one in .243 several years ago.
Rider.......

Nope.......that is an O'Brien Rifle Co rifle. It was Vern O'Brien's Hultgren Grade.......with the 18" Atkinson & Marquart barrel on a Sako L461 action.......sitting in stockwork by Nils Hultgren.

Here's a Winslow Arms 17-222........a Sako L461 barrelled action in stockwork also by Hultgren.

actually, Kenny i moved from the New Mexico desert to the Ozarks and back to NM. give me lemons an i will make lemonade 98% of the time. had a great time hunting here in nm (coyotes, fox, oryx, aoudads bob cat, some prairie dogs, and great hunting in Missouri (deer, groundhogs, armadillo's.
the reason we moved back to nm was the better half parents were getting older and she wanted to spend more time with them.
the bad thing about moving back to nm was rabbit fever had decimated the rabbit population so a lot less targets of opportunity.
Ozarks, rain, ticks, chiggers, high humidity, ice storms, tornados on the positive side, good neighbors, green, good fishing, there are actual curves in the roads, cost of living was lower. better gun laws.
New Mexico dry, consistent weather, lots of public land, mountains 1 hour away, fox and coyote hunting, taxes are higher, and a sawed-off tyrant governor that is crap.

I got introduced to sage rat shooting, and my buddy who brought me out had a Savage in 17 Hornet, while I had a CZ 455 in 22 LR and a 5.56. The 22 LR was too little, and the 5.56 was too much for the rat patch, so I got a Savage 17 Winchester Super Mag, and dang! That's a really accurate rifle. Eventually I ended up changing barrels in my CZ to a 17 HMR, and also got a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet, and those both are super accurate.

Loading for the 17 Hornet was a new challenge, had to upgrade my scale, and so on, but I'm amazed at the accuracy. My main rat gun is a 20 Vartarg, so I am resisting the temptation to get a 17 Mach IV or Fireball.

Sorry for the late reply. That pic was taken a couple years ago while hunting in Texas. Texas still has a bunch of grey fox but down there the red fox is almost non-existent. Have seen quite a few kit fox in deep west Texas though.
I shot that gray fox way back in the early 1960's here in SE Iowa.

I have 17Rem, 17 FB and 17 Hornady hornet. I shoot all of them at PDs and the 17 rem at times get used on coyotes.
Hard to pick a favorite, but on relatively calm days, the 17 hornet is a blast. The rifle is an Anschutz 1771, and it’s very accurate.
Does your Rem .17 blow and exit wound or not?

My favorites are my Savage .17HMR and my two Savage .17 WSM rifles. My HMR is retired. My WSM rifles work much better towards large varmints I encounter while small game hunting. My wife passed away here at home after surgery last month and our youngest son living with us passed away of a sudden heart attack here at home last May so it's just the dogs and me at home. I am just now thinking of hunting again.
😥 So sorry for your losses. Hopefully some time in the woods might help.

Thank you very much, M_S!
We had some very nice Strohmeyers living here in the Burlington, Iowa area and Bill was one of my best friends. He rode a Harley and unfortunately passed away.
My new Savage A17 Sporter .17 was sent back to Savage because of problems and after it was returned, it has to go back to them because it still has problems. I have my trusty Savage BMAG .17 WSM to fall back on.

We will get a good weather warm-up this week and inviting some hunting.

I spotted this surfing on the 'net this morning. It shows two different breeds of rabbits living in MO, common cottontail rabbits and swamp rabbits.

We've got swamp rabbits in Indiana.
Ive seen them. They are BIG!
They are protected as they are endangered in Indiana.
They say southern area but I've seen them up in NW Indiana.

Swamp rabbit is considerably larger by far. Idaho we have Pygmy rabbit, cottontails, (Mountain and Eastern) jack rabbits, (Whitetail and Blacktail) and 3 species of Snowshoe hare.
I'm in Montana and we have none of your pygmy rabbits, cottontails-regular and desert-white tailed jack rabbits and only one specie of snowshoe that I know of. No closed season and no bag limit one any of them. And I love eating them all, except the jackrabbit...

Don't know of a single person who likes jack rabbit. Jackalope maybe. ;)

Don't know of any Strohmeyers in Iowa. Seems to be a popular name though. I heard the old A17 had tons of feeding problems. Something to do with the magazine. The newer A17s had zero issues in Varminter Magazine YouTube video. One accurate rifle. I want one just don't want to pay over $700.00 for one. Buying a 17 hornet from a friend for a great price. Can't wait to try it.
