Today I reassembled it after a number of coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil finish, took some photos. It looks pretty nice! In person the grain has a tiger-stripe flip/flop that's gorgeous.
GOOD GRIEF!! What a GORGEOUS finish! Your statement "it looks pretty nice" is an understatement! WOW! The workmanship on this finished stock is nothing short of beautiful! If this was my rifle, I'd be too afraid to take it out of the gun safe let alone take it out hunting. You have set the bar awfully high, and I admire your workmanship. Congratulations!
Gorgeous rifle! Your scope protection detracts a little. Fyi, your pics link you to your full picture account. That’s quite a snake, what species?carpet python?
Dale06,
Thank you, I had searched for a few years to buy a Sako Vixen 222 varmint barrel model but all I looked at were either rubbish or ridiculously expensive. So I built my own. The scope shown was only on the rifle to develop a load. Once I had it shooting well it was replaced with a Kahles 8x56 scope. I hate ring marks !
GoWyo,
Yes I know the pics will take you to my Flickr account, I was hoping not many would realize that The snake is an Australian Carpet snake, which is a python. We used to share her amongst several places here. She would do the rounds of our houses and get into the roofs and keep any pest species in check. ie possums, mice etc. She was roughly about 16 feet long but sadly we have not seen her in a couple of years and believe she may have passed on. If you look closely you will see she had what we think was a feral cat which she took 3 days to digest before moving off the front verandah. Funny, we had no visitors for those 3 days

Hi Kevin,
Yes I do know this, I don't have a lapping kit and I know I should, just being tight fisted probably Also I use that 36X Sightron to develop loads on what ever rifle then install the scope I have for it, so hence the gas tape for the temp fitting. I do like fixed power scopes like the old Kahle's and Pecar's but good ones getting harder to get these days so do use variables.
I will say this site is a great place to hang out. Getting good advice for free. Does not get any better than that
I should have said, that Sightron 36x scope is only used for two purposes. One is to develop loads for my hunting rifles so it is on and off rifles regularly. Second purpose is a spare for my Bench Rest rifle in case my 45x45 Leupold goes belly up.

I’ve used 6.5x20 leupolds for the same. I also have a 10x Leupold metallic silhouette scope with extra fine duplex that is my test scope, however it has taken up residency on my 788 .223.
